Key Features
The Gibson 490T has a traditional Humbucker tone with a modern edge. It has the tonal characteristics of an original PAF, with a slight increase in upper mid-range response. It can split coils through push/pull knobs and prevents microphonic feedback occurring at high volumes.
Product Ref: 39477
The 490 pickups came about after the emergence of a new type of music coming from the clubs of England - an interpretation of the blues but harder, more rocking and much louder! The players of this music demanded more powerful amps that could handle more volume. This led to the call for a more versatile pickup that could split coils through a push pull knob and prevent microphonic feedback at high volumes. The revolutionary 490T and 490R were born.
The T in 490T stands for treble whilst the R stands for rhythm. A four conducting wiring scheme allows the 490s to be connected to any push/pull knob which means you can split the coils and increase your tone choice. Gibson also introduced wax potting which eliminates air space and consequently feedback. The 490T is calibrated to match the 490R with pole pieces aligned a little further apart to accommodate the bridge string spacing.
