Johnny Marr is an iconic guitarist known for his dynamic guitar playing and arranging in The Smiths. He has transferred his playing into many other groups with stints performing with The The, the Pretenders, Modest Mouse and The Cribs. He has also developed a solo career and made numerous guest appearances.
Johnny demands a guitar capable of creating soundscapes and layered sounds with versatility and clarity. The Fender Johnny Marr Jaguar is based on Johnny's 1965 Jaguar with some highly thoughtful additions and attention to detail in its specifications.
The Fender Johnny Marr Jaguar is constructed with a lightweight alder body, producing a resonant and balanced tone with plenty of clarity and body. The tonewood provides a decent amount of sustain, creating bright, sizzling highs, excellently rounded lows, and beefy mids. Fender have used alder as their tonewood of choice for electric guitars since the 1950s, as the balanced response and slight upper middle definition makes it perfect for rock and blues. A limited edition Lake Placid Blue finish also offers a pleasing aesthetic that is certain to look sublime on-stage, to the studio, and rehearsal room.
The Fender Johnny Marr features the classic Jaguar body with its distinct offset shape. The contours are subtly altered for a more comfortable playing feel, and the guitar is finished in true nitrocellulose lacquer; this was the original finish on vintage Fender guitars and had an ability of letting the wood 'breathe' and resonate more fully. The lacquer also aged gracefully rather than chipping and flaking with age.
The Fender Johnny Marr Jaguar includes a neck specification based on Johnny's '65 Jaguar. It has a custom-profile, along with vintage sized frets and 7.25'' radius. These specifications give it a comfortable and authentically vintage feel.
The Bare Knuckle custom-wound single coil pickups are voiced for Johnny Marr's specific requirements. They provide brightness and clarity with the nuanced sweetness that can be only achieved through single coils. The pickups are the perfect platform for soundscape creation and for playing densely voiced chords whilst maintaining individual note focus.
The Johnny Marr Jaguar features a simpler version of the Jaguar 4-way switching to increase its practicality and ease of use. It gives the capability to use various combinations of pickups, both in series and parallel, providing a very wide range of tonalities to choose from. A master volume and tone provide an easy way to sculpt the overall sound, while two bright switches (one master and one for a single pickup position) give you even more tonal shaping options. These combinations really expand the potential of the Bare Knuckle pickups.
This Fender Jaguar includes a re-designed Jaguar bridge, giving it the same looks but with a more reliable performance. It includes Mustang® saddles, nylon post inserts and a nylon tremolo arm sleeve. These additional features provide a more stable action with increased tuning stability. The nylon sleeve ensures that the tremolo will remain in position when un-touched. The tremolo arm is also taller than standard.
Featuring a carefully fitted synthetic bone nut, the Jaguar delivers an increased resonance and a bright tonality. When compared to traditional plastic and Tusq materials used to construct guitar nuts, synthetic bone improves the vibration transfer between the string and tuning machines without dampening the tone.
Guitarist Magazine gave the Johnny Marr Jaguar 4.5 stars out of 5, saying it's "The most practical and best-sounding Jag we've ever played....
"There's Fender-aplenty in the sounds but, as Marr says, Grestch and Rickenbacker spring to mind, especially with a little tone roll-off. Above all though, the clarity, and the musical sweetness of the tones allow for complex chord voicings for jazzier rhythms or simpler soul and funk styles.... "it's faultlessly built for purpose, addresses five decades of 'Jaguar-ness' and puts a decidedly leftfield design squarely back in the mainstream."Read the full review on the Music Radar website.
